Coupla cheap bags o'shallots (Golden Gourmet, Red Sun), cell-sown, & planted in lotty shadehouse.
They got away nicely, but the 12-odd weeks of hot, sunny, dry demanded repeated watering, resulting in panning of the clay soil &, in essence, build-up of soil atop the clumps... swelling was limited. The surface compost layer demanded by No-dig is likely to be the answer!
